The latest report on the progress of drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene in the world was recently published by the World Health Organization and UNICEF. This is the first update since 2015 when the Sustainable Development Goals were signed and the most comprehensive global assessment.
The report’s importance is that clean water, safe sanitation, and hygiene are both recognized factors as an end in themselves, as a driving force for the progress of other factors, such as health, nutrition, education, and gender equality.
Data indicate that access to water and sanitation has increased. However, there is considerably more effort to achieve universal access. We present the summary of the progress of safe water, safe sanitation, and hygiene prepared by IOM and UNICEF:
