This initiative has been designed with a clear purpose: to address the persistent challenges facing rural education in our country. Tierra Grata is committed to improving this situation and bringing equal educational opportunities to all of Colombia’s children and youth.
In too many rural schools, the challenges to providing an optimal learning environment are daunting. Lack of access to essential basic services, such as clean water, basic sanitation and electricity, drastically limits the potential of our students. Tierra Grata understand the direct impact that this has on the skills, knowledge and opportunities of rural youth. Lack of electricity hinders their growth, scarcity of clean water and inadequate sanitation services increase the risk of disease and undermine their overall well-being.
With the Rural Schools program, we are dedicated to providing access to basic energy, water and sanitation services in Colombia’s rural communities. Through the implementation of decentralized, environmentally sustainable social technologies adapted to rural contexts, we seek to significantly improve the quality of education in these remote areas.
The core of Escuela Grata resides in three innovative solutions that make a visible difference in the lives of our rural students:
- Solar Energy System: We have developed a highly efficient solar energy system that can illuminate classrooms and connect electrical devices necessary for education, such as computers, videobeams, cell phones and tablets. This revolutionary solution allows rural students to access needed electricity and connect to the rest of the world. By providing these opportunities, we enable them to expand their skills and knowledge, opening the door to a successful future.
- Water Filters: Our drip water filters, made with sawdust, clay and a layer of colloidal silver, are an efficient and economical solution to purify water. These filters have the capacity to purify up to 40 liters of water daily, making it fit for human consume. By providing safe drinking water, we reduce the risk of waterborne diseases, thus improving the health and well-being of rural students. In this way, they can fully concentrate on their education without worrying about the quality of the water they consume.
- Dry Bathrooms: Our sustainable sanitation structure includes toilets with liquid and solid separators, which do not require water to flush the waste. Instead, we use a mixture of lime, sawdust and ashes, which prevents unpleasant odors and generates compost. In addition, we have incorporated an optional shower module to promote proper hygiene habits. These sanitary solutions improve sanitation conditions in rural schools, reducing the risk of disease and creating a more comfortable and dignified environment for students.
The union of these three innovative solutions of the Escuela Grata program has a significant impact on the lives of rural students. It provides them with access to the same educational opportunities as their urban peers, fostering their integral development and empowering them to reach their full potential. In addition, by improving basic living conditions, such as electricity, clean water and sanitation, we create an environment conducive to learning and the overall well-being of students.
